Overseas Capstone Program

The purpose of the overseas capstone program is to continue Chinese language training and allow students opportunities to utilize their language and domain training in academic and professional contexts. Students spend a semester at Nanjing University, then an additional semester doing an internship in a Chinese company.

Program Features

  1. Pre-departure Preparation Course
    • logisitics & cultural preparation
    • learning strategies & expectations
    • language proficiency testing
  2. Nanjing University
    • In-country orientation period (two weeks prior to classes); selection & training of tutors; direct enrollment course selection; housing; HSK testing, etc...
    • Media, Current Events, and Culture Course (via news media, literature, social science topics) Special Community Lectures
    • Advanced Writing & Composition Course
    • Direct Enrollment in Nanjing University Courses in students’ specialization (2 courses)
    • Community Service/Practicum
    • Peer content tutors
    • Small Group Meetings (cultural debriefing)
    • Special Lectures (from community members)
  3. Internships
    • Pre-internship Workshop at Qingdao Flagship Center
    • Internship placement throughout China (4 months)

 

The BYU Chinese Flagship Center:

  • Sponsors a STARTALK Summer Camp Program for high school students.
  • Partners with local high schools to provide distance learning opportunities.
  • Works with BYU Independent study toward a integrated web-based Mandarin Course for high school.

 

College students participate in both a domestic and an overseas component. The program culminates with an academic year long capstone experience, including direct enrollment at Nanjing University and an internship in China.

 

Chinese Flagship students attend their final semester at Nanjing University with a culminating internship in an area of interest to them which allows students to utilize their Chinese language skills in a professional setting.
