Early Flagship Program

novice-intermediate level proficiency; Chinese 101-202

Students participating in the Early Flagship Program are introduced to Flagship methods and principles while receiving dedicated advisement and tutoring with their regular Chinese studies. This special training helps prepare participants for the Advanced Flagship Program.

Program Features

  1. Enrollment in a 1 credit hour course (Chinese 490R), with the following requirements:
    • Completion of a 5-6 page culture project that addresses a specific culture topic
    • Oral presentation of the culture project
    • Chinese summary and lexicon of the culture project (appropriate to level of Chinese)
  2. Access to Chinese language lab for help with Chinese homework.
  3. Statement of intent to pursue formal admission to the Chinese Flagship Advanced Program.
  4. Regular Chinese proficiency testing and evaluation.
  5. Attendance at all formal Flagship presentations, with reflection assignments
  6. $200-300/semester scholarships
  7. Priority consieration into the Advanced Flagship Program
  8. Advisement and evaluation

Early Entry program admission does not guarantee admission into the advanced Flagship Program. Students will be required to formally apply with a full portfolio for admission to the advanced program based on their progress in language learning and Flagship goal development.

 

The BYU Chinese Flagship Center:

  • Sponsors a STARTALK Summer Camp Program for high school students.
  • Partners with local high schools to provide distance learning opportunities.
  • Works with BYU Independent study toward a integrated web-based Mandarin Course for high school.

 

College students participate in both a domestic and an overseas component. The program culminates with an academic year long capstone experience, including direct enrollment at Nanjing University and an internship in China.

 

Chinese Flagship students attend their final semester at Nanjing University with a culminating internship in an area of interest to them which allows students to utilize their Chinese language skills in a professional setting.
