Advanced Flagship Program
advanced-superior level proficiency; Chinese 301 and up
Students participating in the Advanced Program are formally accepted to the full Flagship Program. During their first year students focus on buidling general, advanced level Chinese language skills and working on major course requirements. In their second year on campus they take rigorous advanced-level Flagship Coursework, related to their field of study, that prepares them for further study and work in China.
Program Features
First Year Students
- Access to Chinese language lab for help with Chinese homework.
- Enrollment in 1 credit hour culture/domain course (Chinese 490R)
- Completion of a 7-8 page culture project that addresses a specific topic related to the student’s major course of study.
- Oral presentation of the domain project in Chinese
- Chinese summary and lexicon of the culture project (appropriate to level of Chinese)
- Regular Chinese proficiency testing and evaluation.
- $1000/semester scholarships.
- Particpation in all Flagship debates and formal presentations.
Second Year Students
- Enrollment in Flagship courses
- Advanced conversation & rhetoric
- Directed studies (domain specific)
- One-on-one peer tutoring (5 hours per week)
- Regular Chinese proficiency testing and evaluation.
- $3000/semester scholarships
- Overseas financial support for year 3 (overseas study in Nanjing and internship)
In some cases students with exceptional Chinese language skills may enter the Advanced Program at the second year.
