Advanced Students

Seth Carter

From Dallas, TX. Majoring in Chinese Minoring in Music. I was born and raised in the state of Mississippi, a place which, culturally and linguistically, is probably the farthest place from China. Despite this, I have developed a profound interest in and appreciation of the "Middle Kingdom," and I hope to be able to use the language and cultural experience I gain in the Flagship Program to work and live in China. In addition, I am a purveyor of all things Starcraft and enjoy playing the dobro (until my wife complains about the excessive volume)

Robert Cusick 古志文

From El Paso, TX. Majoring in Chinese Minoring in German and Business Management. While growing up I lived in Germany for nine years. This experience instilled an interest and appreciation of other cultures in me. China is one of the fastest growing nations in the world and the opportunities there are limitless. I am confident that the Chinese Flagship Program will help me fulfill my goal of doing business with China.

James Greenwood

I graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead with an Associates Degree and am currently a Chinese major at BYU. I plan on working in the government after graduation and hope to improve international relations between China and the United States. I am married and have beautiful baby girl. I also enjoy family activites and playing sports.

Eric Hansen

I am a junior majoring in Chinese and minoring in business. Upon completion of my undergraduate studies I plan to attend law school. Professionally I hope to practice law in an area that will allow me to utilize my language skills and interact with China. I enjoy spending my free time outdoors rock climbing and hiking.

Jessica Hawkes

Jessica joined Chinese Flagship for the opportunity to integrate her chinese into her passion of personal training. She wants to be a personal life trainer and help companies in China set up programs for their employees.

Jaren Knighton

From Pocatello, ID. Junior Majoring in Business and Chinese. Jaren is a Junior from Gilbert, AZ. He plans to use the skills he learns in the Flagship program to work for an engineering firm in China to design and oversee the building of sky scrapers and bridges.

Steven Kitterman

Majoring in Geography Cartography, Chinese, and programming are Steven’s main professional interests. Whether in China or America, he plans on using Chinese as a web map developer, creating interactive maps for Chinese audiences. He has chosen to join the Chinese Flagship program because of its academic rigor and cultural literacy and looks forward to the doors it will open for his career.

Mengxi Li Seeley

Senior Majoring in International Relations My name is Margaret Li Seeley. I'm kind of from three places. I lived the first five years of my life in Wuhan, Hubei, China, but then grew up in the Bay Area of California and Cedar Hills, Utah. I'm an International Relations major with a Chinese minor. I love learning about world events and different cultures. I joined Flagship to improve my Chinese skills and it's been great. Thanks for the opportunity!

Jonathan Nelson 孫志恩

Majoring in Chinese and Accounting (Masters in Accounting - Professional Stem). Jonathan is from Southern California. He served a LDS mission in Taiwan. He is studying international business along with Chinese.

Paul Niedfeldt 聂明义

Shayn Stephens

Shayn began studying Chinese in high school as a sophomore and attended two summers of the Startalk camp at BYU. She continued to study when she came to BYU as an undergraduate with a minor in International Development. She recently participated in the Nanjing study abroad, and hopes to utilize Flagship to reach her language and career goals.

Benjamin Trueman

Ben has lived in California, Oregon and Canada. Ben joined the Flagship program because it fits perfectly with his professional and career goals. He feels like it will give him the edge he needs to succeed in the international business world. He also loves the Chinese language and the people. He feels the Flagship program helps him build the fluency and cultural understanding he desires. He plans to get and MBA following his Flagship experience.


Pre-Advanced Students

Shane Gallagher

From Joplin, Missouri. Shane is from Joplin, Missouri. He is using Flagship set himself apart from the competition and enhancing his opportunity to have a career in China. He and his wife, Alisha, spent last summer in Taiwan learning more Chinese and traveling. His secret talent is making balloon animals.

Trevor Heder

From Pleasant Grove, Utah. Trevor Heder learned to speak Chinese in Taiwan while serving an LDS mission. He joined Flagship because he felt like it was an intensive program that could push his Chinese. Trevor hopes for his Chinese to continue to progress so that he can feel confident and efficient working in China. Heder also enjoys most anything outdoors and playing the banjo.

Crismon Lewis

Crismon is a senior majoring in Chinese and hails from Gresham, OR. Through the Flagship program, he hopes to couple his Chinese ability with education in developing instructional curriculum for the Chinese language and culture, and is considering teaching the language professionally. He enjoys spending time with his wife, reading, and being outdoors.
