K-12 Outreach Initiatives

The BYU Chinese Flagship Center is involved in various K-12 Outreach initiatives designed to create a pipelines for Early and Advanced Flagship Programs. These initiatives include the STARTALK High School Program, which provides an intense language summer camp for high school students. Another initiative is the E-Chinese (formally EDNET) project develops distance-based instructional materials for selected Utah high schools. The Flagship Center is collaborating with the BYU Independent Studies Office on a second generation of E-Chinese that would serve Utah high schools and beyond. More recently, the Center has supported the "Step by Step" Immersion Project, which designs Chinese literacy materials designed for use specifically in K-6 Chinese Immersion programs, but also for elementary school foreign language education programs generally.

The BYU Chinese Flagship Center:

  • Sponsors a STARTALK Summer Camp Program for high school students.
  • Partners with local high schools to provide distance learning opportunities.
  • Works with BYU Independent study toward a integrated web-based Mandarin Course for high school.

College students participate in both a domestic and an overseas component. The program culminates with an academic year long capstone experience, including direct enrollment at Nanjing University and an internship in China.

Chinese Flagship students attend their final semester at Nanjing University with a culminating internship in an area of interest to them which allows students to utilize their Chinese language skills in a professional setting.

Take advantage of the new program for a head start with the EARLY FLAGSHIP PROGAM. Application deadlines are coming up!
