This past April 18th almost a thousand junior high and high school students from 37 secondary schools descended on the Tanner building at BYU to participate in Chinese language and cultural activities such as calligraphy, Chinese chess, Martial Arts, Lion Dance, Bingo, Karaoke, and photos in front of the Great Wall. All students and volunteers were asked to speak only Chinese during the activities, and a mock “jail” with “police” was set up for violators who used English! This was all in fun, and students were released from jail after answering a few questions in Chinese (this was one of the students favorite activities)!

Students also participated in competitions that included poetry recitation, interview, skit/drama, singing group, and a cultural art display. We also had a Confucius Institute speech contest where students were able to win scholarships to study in Szechuan, China this summer.

All students earned points from their competition results to go toward their school total, and three high schools and three middle schools received trophies:

This past week director Zhang Qin has been at BYU meeting with students, faculty, and staff. She has been observing Chinese Flagship tutoring as well as class instruction in order to take the best practices back to the Nanjing Center. Zhang Qin enjoys working with the Flagship students more than anything else in the program. She appreciates the enthusiasm and strong work ethic that the students uphold. She also believes that Nanjing is the best place to hold this program because it is considered the education capital of China and has a strong historical and cultural background. According to Zhang Qin, this program is built to provide the best opportunities for Chinese learners, however, the students are the ones who decide how much they truly get out of it.
